We have all noticed stickers on the fruits we buy, but are not aware what they actually mean. They represent information about the fruit and its way of growth.

The PLU code shows whether the fruit is organic or GMO, whether it contains pesticides, chemical fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, and more.

PLU codes:

  • 4 digit code that starts with 3 or 4 – it means that the fruit contains pesticides and was a conventional growth
  • 5 digit PLU code that starts with 9 – it has grown according to the USDA organic standards, and it is organic.
  • 5 digit code that starts with 8 – this is a GMO product.
  • 5 digit code which starts with 3 – this is an electronically pasteurized or irradiated products.
  • If the sticker starts with a 6 – this product is pre-cut.
  • If there is no sticker – this is a fruit of suspicious production. If in case you know the producer, then you don’t have to worry, but do not buy it if you don’t know them. This may show it has not been imported, or the sticker has been removed for different reasons.

These codes have been claimed by the International Federation for Produce Standards. This is a global organization that provides codes to fruits and vegetables, and retail companies use them for products and point of sale codes.
