Homemade Sloppy Joes

Homemade Sloppy Joes are a classic comfort food that’s easy to make and always satisfying. Here’s a simple recipe for you to try:

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef (or turkey for a lighter option)
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon mustard (yellow or Dijon)
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder (adjust to taste)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Hamburger buns, for serving

Instructions:

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add chopped onion and green bell pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  2. Add minced garlic to the skillet and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  3. Add ground beef to the skillet. Cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and cooked through.
  4. Once the meat is cooked, drain excess fat from the skillet if needed.
  5. Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine.
  6. Reduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, to allow the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken slightly.
  7. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
  8. Serve the Sloppy Joe mixture on hamburger buns, either open-faced or closed, as desired.
