Jo had become dependent on alcohol and reportedly drank three bottles of wine a day! She seriously damaged her liver and developed cirrhosis.
The scar tissue in her liver cause the nutrients that a healthy liver processes to build up in her abdomen. Jo had so much fluid in her belly, she had to get it drained (which was a painful process to endure). After going through this medical emergency, Jo did get sober, but her liver will never recover.
