Patty Melts with Secret Sauce are the perfect mashup of a burger and grilled cheese — crispy, melty, savory, and totally comforting.
Ingredients:
For the Patty Melts:
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20 for juiciness)
- Salt & pepper
- 8 slices rye or sourdough bread
- 4 tbsp butter (for grilling)
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced (for caramelizing)
- 8 slices of Swiss or American cheese
For the Secret Sauce:
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tbsp yellow mustard
- 1 tbsp finely chopped pickles or relish
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- A dash of hot sauce (optional)
👨🍳 Instructions:
1️⃣ Caramelize the onions:
In a skillet over medium heat, cook sliced onions in a bit of butter or oil for 15–20 minutes until soft and golden.
2️⃣ Form and cook patties:
Shape ground beef into 4 thin oval patties (to match your bread shape). Season with salt and pepper. Sear in a skillet over medium-high heat for 3–4 minutes per side until cooked through. Set aside.
3️⃣ Mix secret sauce:
In a bowl, combine mayo, ketchup, mustard, pickles, garlic powder, and hot sauce. Stir until smooth.
4️⃣ Assemble the melts:
Butter one side of each bread slice. On the unbuttered side, spread secret sauce, add a slice of cheese, a patty, caramelized onions, another slice of cheese, and top with another slice of bread (butter side out).
5️⃣ Grill until golden:
Cook each sandwich in a skillet over medium heat for 2–3 minutes per side, until bread is golden and cheese is melted.
