Homemade Krispy Kremes Recipe

🧈 Ingredients:

For the donuts:

  • 2 ¼ tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • ½ cup warm water (110°F / 43°C)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup evaporated milk (or whole milk)
  • 1 egg
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour (plus more for kneading)
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • Vegetable or canola oil (for frying)

For the glaze:

  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup milk
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

👩‍🍳 Instructions:

1. Make the dough:

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water with 1 tsp of the sugar. Let sit for 5–10 min until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl or mixer, combine the yeast mixture, remaining sugar, milk, egg, butter, salt, and flour. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead for about 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

2. Shape the donuts:

  1. Roll dough on a floured surface to about ½ inch thick.
  2. Cut out donuts using a donut cutter or two round cutters (about 3″ for the outer ring and 1″ for the center).
  3. Place on parchment-lined trays, cover lightly, and let rise again for 30–45 minutes until puffy.

3. Fry the donuts:

  1. Heat oil in a deep fryer or heavy pot to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Fry a few donuts at a time, 1–2 minutes per side, until golden.
  3. Remove with slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

4. Make the glaze:

  1. Whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth.
  2. While donuts are still warm, dip them face-down into the glaze, then let them set on a wire rack.
